Kenkeleba House: The Last Surviving Downtown Art Collective

Marking the close of "Joe Overstreet: Taking Flight," join us for two days of trailblazing speakers, dynamic scholars, and arts community organizers. We will commemorate the legacy of Kenkeleba house, a non-profit and arts center co-founded by the artist in 1974 to celebrate African American artists with a series of insightful and exploratory discussions featuring national scholars and Jackson-based cultural producers.

DAY 1: January 23
Panel discussion featuring Kenkeleba House alum, artists Odili Donald Odita; Mary Lovelace O’Neal
Presentation and panel with Maya HaraKawa, author of Black Art in Harlem in the 1960s; Josie Roland Hodson PhD candidate in African American Studies and History of Art at Yale; Alexandra M. Thomas Asst. Professor of Art History at Fordham University; and Abbe Schriber, Asst. Professor at the University of South Carolina

DAY 2: January 24
Intergenerational panel discussion with Jackson’s arts community organizers past and present. This discussion will include Jackson-based artists and creatives Wendy Shenefelt with Alternate Roots; Mississippi invitational artist and cultural producer Christina Mcfield; Founder of vibe Studio Alexis Noble; and Gus Daniels-Washington with JXNOLOGY.
